Court Denies Request For Carson Media Reports

On Wednesday, a Winston-Salem judge heard arguments to move the trial for Demario Atwater, one of the men accused of killing former UNC Student Body President Eve Carson, to Virginia. No decision on that matter has been made, and jury selection for the May trial has already begun.

But the court did throw out the defense’s request for all related reports to be collected by media outlets. Sixty media outlets were subpoenaed by Atwater’s defense lawyers. It was the team’s latest attempt to prove their client will not receive a fair trial in North Carolina and that the trial should be moved . The subpoena also calls for a profile of the media’s circulation or viewing/listening audience.

Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr., is also accused of killing Carson and is facing first-degree murder. However because of his age, he cannot be sentenced to death. He was only 17 at the time Carson was killed.

Last Thursday, UNC dedicated a garden on Polk Place to the late student body president.
